NBC and a variety of local outlets covered the University of Texas at Arlington’s suspension of fraternity and sorority activities over ”concerns regarding the culture of the fraternal community.” During the pause, the university has assembled a Fraternity and Sorority Life Task Force to review the state of affairs within Greek life and recommend steps to affect a positive shift in the community culture. The suspension was not based on a singular event but was sparked by concerns about fraternal culture both on the campus and nationally.
Four former Pennsylvania State University fraternity brothers have been sentenced in connection with the death of 19-year-old sophomore pledge Timothy Piazza during a hazing ritual in February 2017. Luke Visser, Joseph Sala, Joshua Kurczewski, and Michael Bonattuci, former members of the Penn State chapter of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, were sentenced on Tuesday by a judge in Centre County Court in Bellefonte, Penn. All four had previously pleaded guilty to hazing-related charges. ABC News, CNN, USA Today and NBC News covered this story along with other outlets, including Beta Theta Pi.
We are so grateful for our workforce volunteers for all the time, talent, energy, and love you devote to Theta. Kappa Alpha Theta would not be the organization it is today without you. During this Volunteer Appreciation Week, be sure to thank one another for the love you share for Theta and the meaningful friendships and exceptional bonds you’ve developed together. You are so special to us. Thank you!
With the departure this week of Assistant Director of Education & Leadership Victoria Stankus, please direct all communication for programs and services under education & leadership to Director of Education & Leadership Melissa Shaub. Questions that would have normally gone to Vicki regarding the following areas should now go to Melissa: Alcohol Skills Training Program (ASTP), Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI), member orientation, Outstanding Faculty program, scholarship, and service trips.
Our High Five Friday features in April are full (with a special Advisor Appreciation edition coming on April 26!), but we need a pool of volunteer nominations for the summer. Please submit nominations to Laura Stelsel, assistant director of alumnae engagement. If you have a specific reason why you are nominating a volunteer, include it so we can let them know via the notification email they receive when the social media post goes live. Those who nominate featured volunteers are copied on the message, too.
Please refer to the helpful new Igloo resource, Rental Cars: How to Book Them, when renting cars for Theta travel.
