According to The New York Times, rumors surrounding an undercover documentary about #BamaRush being filmed on the University of Alabama campus have caused high tensions across the university’s fraternal life. The scale and culture surrounding the recruitment process at Alabama made international news last year after videos posted by participants in the annual event went viral on TikTok. This sparked interest from media companies (HBO/Vice Studios) in developing a documentary about #BamaRush during 2022 recruitment. With filmmakers now on campus in Tuscaloosa, concerns about hidden microphones were a topic of much discussion, both on and off campus (with filmmakers denying that they had engaged potential new members [PNMs] in this manner). Marina Anderson, a PNM, was accused of recording inside a party and told she was being dismissed from the recruitment process. Her Campus says that details about the angle and approach of the HBO/Vice documentary remain unclear. (Note: National Panhellenic Conference [NPC] CEO Dani Weatherford is providing additional information directly to member organization leaders as NPC learns more.)
In addition to the documentary rumors, the inclusivity of the Alabama Panhellenic Association has been questioned after Grant Sikes, a transgender student famous for sharing her #BamaRush experience on TikTok, was released just before bid day. In her recent Instagram post, Grant shares that “being dropped from my last house this morning during primary recruitment at the University of Alabama doesn’t come as a surprise considering out of the almost 20 chapters—I was dropped by every single one except two before day one, Gamma Phi Beta and Kappa Alpha Theta.”
