News from the Industry
Inside Higher Ed reported that the parents of Max Gruver, a student at Louisiana State University (LSU) who died from alcohol intoxication after a hazing ritual for Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, filed a $25 million lawsuit against the university alleging they responded with “deliberate indifference” to allegations of hazing at fraternities. The suit is based on a Title IX complaint that the university disparately responds to allegations and reports of hazing in fraternities and sororities. A few of the claims provided in the 66-page complaint allege LSU responds aggressively to allegations of hazing at sororities but takes a “boys being boys” attitude toward fraternities. Phi Delta Theta suspended operations at LSU last year after Gruver’s death.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed anti-hazing legislation aimed at keeping students safe by prohibiting certain physical contact and activity in any organization’s initiation ceremony. The Associated Press reported the measure was passed five years after the death of Chun “Michael” Deng, a student at Baruch College who died after suffering a head injury during a Pi Delta Psi hazing ritual.
**Note: We anticipate coverage next week of the final NPC organization suspending its presence at Harvard University due to the university’s single-gender policy.**
