This week

The Associated Press reported that Tres Genco, 21, of Hillsboro, Ohio, has been denied release after he was arrested and accused of plotting to kill sorority members at an Ohio university. A judge cited the “serious nature of the charges” as reasons for Genco to remain behind bars. Prosecutors stated that Genco interacts with online forums that advocate for violence against women.

Last week

NBC News and other national news outlets reported that on July 21 an Ohio man was arrested and charged with attempting a hate crime by plotting to kill sorority women and illegally possessing a machine gun. Tres Genco, 21, planned on killing 3,000 women at an undisclosed Ohio university, according to his manifesto. If convicted of the hate crime, he could face up to life in prison.

Week of July 20

The Hechinger Report released an analysis of new Gallup research (conducted on behalf of the National Panhellenic Conference [NPC] and the North American Interfraternity Conference [NIC]) that found that fraternity- and sorority-affiliated students had stronger experiences as undergraduates and as they entered the workforce. The poll, which was administered to 10,000 adults with bachelor’s degrees across the United States, found that fraternity and sorority members were employed more quickly and felt more engaged and satisfied with their lives post-graduation. The poll also found that affiliated alumni thought more fondly about their college experience than unaffiliated alumni.

Officer/Advisor Training

Officer and advisor training is picking back up again. We will continue to post regularly about our upcoming training opportunities for members. So far, training for recruitment advisors who advise a fall recruitment chapter, scholarship advisors, scholarship directors, and member orientation and ritual have already taken place. Thanks to all our teams for working to get those programs completed with school and recruitment starting again.

August 11: Conversation with National CASA/GAL for college officers
August 16: Facility management training
August 17: Recruitment advisor training for those with spring recruitment
August 19: Panhellenic & campus relationship training for Panhellenic advisors & advisory board chairmen (ABCs)

Junior Leadership Program

This program is back with one change. Instead of running the program over the course of the academic year, it will be split into fall and spring semester programs. The fall program applications with open later this month.

Young Alumnae Leadership Program

This successful program is back and applications for the October-to-April program will open this month. The Young Alumnae Leadership Program is open to recent graduates who are also serving as advisors.

Quarterly Programs

Last year, we hosted monthly programs for advisors and alumnae chapter officers. This year, these will move to quarterly programs. Fall programs will take place in September and November, with topics to be announced later.
