Bloomsburg police are investigating the September death of a Bloomsburg University student from the Philadelphia area who died hours after he left his dormitory to attend a fraternity party, The Morning Call, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and WNEP 16 report. The Bloomsburg police chief said alcohol was involved, and police are looking into the alcohol source but declined to comment on whether police were probing a connection to fraternal organizations. King had an invitation to a fraternity party the night of his death, according to multiple sources, who were unwilling to identify the fraternity; a fraternity recruitment card was found in his room after his death. Last week, the university announced a crackdown on fraternity/sorority life, instituting new rules and placing all 25 fraternity and sorority chapters on probation for the next 18 months. The university made no mention of King's death and said it had been considering such changes for months.
Four Florida State University (FSU) members of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity—including the chapter’s president and treasurer—have been charged with hazing that created a substantial risk of physical injury or death. The scene described to investigators resembled the fraternity hijinks seen in movies, but quickly escalated into what police say was hazing. The incident took place in late September, according to USA Today and CBS 4. The national chapter of the fraternity suspended FSU’s chapter back in late September and the university suspended the fraternity in November following its investigation.
A police investigation has been launched into allegations of anti-Semitic slurs and assault after a reported fight between members of two fraternities at Indiana University's Bloomington campus, according to Newsweek, ABC News and USA Today. The incident involved "physical assault, as well as allegations of anti-Semitic and racial slurs," the school said in a statement released Sunday. Members of Alpha Epsilon Pi, which is a traditionally Jewish fraternity, were involved in the fight as they tried to enter a party at the Pi Kappa Phi house. Pi Kappa Phi has been suspended by the university.
Penn State fraternity members will not be charged in the death of 17-year-old John “Jack” Schoenig, according to the Daily Collegian. On Oct. 19, Schoenig went into cardiac arrest and died of chemical asphyxia due to nitrous oxide while at a house occupied by Chi Phi Fraternity members. Individuals present called for help for Schoenig and stayed with him until police arrived, giving them immunity under Pennsylvania's “Drug Overdose Response Immunity” statute. Penn State initially placed an interim suspension on Chi Phi, but it was lifted a month after Schoenig's death.
