House Republicans on the Education and Workforce Committee have advanced legislation to reauthorize the Higher Education Act, and have included language that would include basic protections for single-gender organizations. The Chronicle of Higher Education provides coverage of the relevant provisions that would bar institutions that recognize single-gender groups from forcing those groups to “admit as a member an individual who does not meet the organization’s criteria for single-sex status.” Inside Higher Ed also has a round-up of the full legislation, although it does not specifically address elements related to single-gender organizations.
The latest grand jury report regarding the death of fraternity pledge Tim Piazza at Penn State University provided a scathing review of the university’s oversight, according to extensive coverage in outlets such as ABC News, NPR, CNN and CBS Philly. The 144-page report was released Friday, with the district attorney calling Penn State’s oversight “a joke and a catastrophe.” The text of the report also recommends a series of changes that the school should undertake in the wake of Piazza’s February death.
A hazing incident involving the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at the University of Houston has led to a hazing indictment from a grand jury, according to coverage in the Associated Press and the Houston Chronicle, among others.

Kappa Alpha Theta headquarters will be closed Monday, Dec. 25, 2017, through Friday, Jan. 5, 2018. The next edition of The Update will be Jan. 9, 2018.

Laura Locke, college committee chairman, is delighted to announce that Ana Schwab, Lambda/Vermont, has been appointed by Grand Council to serve as college district director (CDD) in College District III. Ana replaces Jackie Martin who recently resigned as CDD.
