News from the Industry
Inside Higher Ed reports that The University of Minnesota has proposed a policy that could hold an entire student group accountable if a single member breaks institutional rules. A whole group could also be held responsible if its officers “knew or reasonably should have known” that a group member was going to violate the conduct code at a group event and the leaders didn’t take steps to stop that person from doing so. Students and professors have voiced their concerns over the new policy. This is one type of policy that the NPC’s group due process efforts are trying to target: policies that punish entire groups for the actions of an individual.
Coverage of Penn State fraternity pledge Tim Piazza continues at the one-year anniversary of his death. The renewed attention to fraternities and hazing reform on campus has been featured in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, NPR and the Daily Collegian.
Workforce Updates
CrowdChange
Beginning in January, Theta launched a partnership with CrowdChange for college chapters to fundraise online. We are happy to report that the tool is already getting plenty of use. Please be advised that online fundraisers will not be approved until there is an approved pre-event checklist (PEC) for fundraisers in the Officer Portal (OP). Ellen Barlow, assistant director of education & leadership, has been reaching out to let chapters know why their event hasn’t yet been approved. If you receive questions about this or anything else philanthropy-related, please contact philanthropy@kappaalphatheta.org or encourage any college chapter officers or alumnae volunteers to do the same.
