Multiple local outlets—including the student paper The Nevada Sagebrush—have coverage of the decision by Panhellenic sororities at the University of Nevada-Reno to disaffiliate from the university following a breakdown in negotiations regarding their status as student organizations. The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) provided media counsel to the campus Panhellenic leadership and issued a media statement in response to numerous media inquiries.
Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) announced plans for a national multidisciplinary research center on fraternities and sororities as part of an effort for change following the death of a fraternity pledge. University officials pledged $2 million Tuesday for the creation of the Timothy J. Piazza Center for Fraternity and Sorority Research and Reform, named after the student who died in 2017. The goal is to raise money for an $8 million endowment. Two University of Oklahoma students posted a racist video of them in blackface, and the backlash they received led them to leave the university. Delta Delta Delta confirmed at least one of the women involved in the video is now a former member. London Moore, president of the chapter, was quoted in coverage from NBC News, saying, “Our chapter condemns the racist, offensive and disgraceful conduct of the two women involved in the video. Kellie Dickerson, alumnae district director (ADD) in Alumnae District III is resigning from her ADD role after seven years to devote more time to her Fraternity Housing Corporation (FHC) and enterprise risk management (ERM) committee roles. Elizabeth Rasmussen, budget district director (BDD) in College District I, is resigning from her position to devote time to obtaining her PhD. She will remain in office until Grand Council appoints her replacement and will assist in the transition of the new committee member.
