News from the Industry
Coverage continues on the hazing death of a Florida State University student. Nine members of the Phi Kappa Phi fraternity were arrested after a Pi Kappa Phi hopeful, Andrew Coffey, died at a pledge party due to acute alcohol poisoning. Coverage of the arrests has been featured in the Philadelphia Tribune and Daily Beast. University President John Thrasher says he and his staff are working on major changes to prevent future tragedies. The president’s reform initiatives have received coverage in the Orlando Sentinel, Tallahassee Democrat, Naples Herald, and My Panhandle.
The Washington Post reports that several fraternity chapters at Yale University have postponed recruiting events amid a push by student activists to make the social organizations open to both men and women. The fraternities put off rush events scheduled for last weekend when students ineligible for membership indicated they planned to attend. As fraternities expressed concern about how to handle such visits, Yale Senior Associate Dean Burgwell Howard urged local chapter leaders in a letter Thursday to open recruiting events to all students, including women. In other Yale news, a Yale fraternity, whose five-year suspension for vulgar chants about women ended in 2016, faces new allegations of sexual misconduct. The allegations have received coverage in Business Insider and Yale Daily News.
The University of Pittsburgh has suspended a fraternity and temporarily barred all Greek-life organizations from hosting events with alcohol after a student was hospitalized in an "alcohol-related incident." Coverage of the incident and subsequent alcohol ban has appeared in the Associated Press, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and CBS Pittsburgh.
Republican Rep. Patrick Meehan, under fire for using taxpayer money for a payment to a former staff member after a sexual harassment accusation, says he will not seek reelection. The announcement was covered by the New York Times, Washington Post, NPR, CNN, and others. Before announcing his decision, Congressman Meehan had introduced the Report and Educate About Campus Hazing Act (REACH ACT) with Congresswoman Marcia Fudge (D-OH). The legislation would require colleges and universities to track and report hazing and to provide students with educational programming on hazing.

“I studied astrophysics and aerospace engineering in college, graduating with my PhD in engineering in 2015. Most of the time, I was one of only a handful of women in my classes, and I want to see this improve in future generations. This is one of the reasons Theta is so important in my life. Theta gave me the support and encouragement I needed from a group of empowered and forward-thinking women role models when I needed it the most.”
