In a comprehensive investigatory piece, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported on the state of institutional sanctions against fraternities and sororities this semester—within the context of high profile protests (particularly of fraternities). After tracking more than two dozen fraternities and sororities, reporter Kate Hidalgo Bellows found that while there have been several alcohol- and hazing-related deaths, fraternity chapter expulsion was rare this semester. Her reporting found few common patterns regarding the length of suspensions, while noting most suspensions stemmed from hazing and alcohol violations rather than sexual violence (which spurred protests this fall).
