Value Walk reported that George Washington University is considering an anti-discrimination rule that some fear may threaten Greek life. The rule states that “failing or refusing to allow an individual to participate in a student organization or activity based on their protected characteristics” would be considered discriminatory. Though the university has denied it intends to target fraternities and sororities, some have expressed concern that single-sex organizations such as fraternities and sororities would be forced to include members of the opposite sex in their organizations or be forced to disband. The College Fix also reported on the proposed rule and quoted Dani Weatherford, executive director of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), “NPC is aware of the policy and is working to understand the implications.”
The Associated Press reported on the investigation of the Old Dominion University chapter of Alpha Phi based on allegations of racist conduct by members. Several offensive tweets led to the current suspension, in addition to alleged offensive behavior toward a black sorority member. The story was reposted by Fox News and NBC Washington.
WVLT reported on the suspension of a member of the University of Tennessee chapter of Alpha Chi Omega after a video was posted of the member allegedly using racial slurs. Knox news.also reported on the incident, saying Alpha Chi Omega is moving forward with the membership termination process.
