According to the Associated Press, Alpha Omicron Pi will pay more than $250,000 in refunds to students at the University of Washington under a consent decree announced by the Washington Attorney General’s Office. The office accused the sorority of violating emergency regulations by charging University of Washington members housing fees even as students couldn’t stay in the sorority’s house during the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. Although the sorority states it “had every right to charge the fees," Washington’s coronavirus regulations barred rent charges when tenants couldn’t access their housing. Ferguson also accused the sorority of violating the state’s Consumer Protection Act.
The Cavalier Daily reports that as of last Friday, the anti-hazing legislation, Adam’s Law, has taken effect in the state of Virginia. The law mandates anti-hazing training for fraternities and sororities beginning this fall and requires that institutions provide a public report of hazing violations. The University of Virginia (UVA) recently expelled both Phi Gamma Delta and Kappa Alpha due to hazing this spring by both fraternities. In total, five UVA Greek men’s organizations were disciplined for hazing this spring.
According to the New York Post, 12 additional Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity brothers accused of hazing at the University of New Hampshire have been arrested. The arrests are regarding the alleged hazing of new members that took place at the fraternity’s house on April 13. The fraternity, which has acknowledged the incident, has suspended its chapter pending the outcome of a police investigation.

Pansy Patch 2022 has officially closed and thanks to the generosity and thoughtfulness of Thetas, friends, and family, an incredible $84,135 has been raised for the Theta Forever Fund. When a donation is made to the Pansy Patch, that generous gift is celebrated with an electronic pansy in the garden and this year nearly 5,000 blooms were sent! Visit PansyPatch.org to see the final list of donors and recipients, as well as view the final chapter standings.
Generous donors joining the Gold Pansy Patch Giving Clubs led the way for the Pansy Patch! Every generous donor who gave at one of the three levels receives a custom pansy pin denoting membership in these clubs. Every honoree receives a gold symbol commemorating the thoughtfulness demonstrated by the donor who honored them! This opportunity will return with Pansy Patch in 2024.
Until then, thank you to every “planter” who made this year’s Pansy Patch bloom! Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation is proud to provide the members of Kappa Alpha Theta funding opportunities so they can embrace their ambition, reach their fullest potential, and make a difference in the world.
