In a lengthy profile, USA Today offers a window into the sorority experience of 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Ca. “Her sorority sisters say Harris was born to lead, and she got some of her earliest training as an Alpha Kappa Alpha woman at Howard,” writes Nicquel Terry Ellis. The story goes on to detail various ways Harris’s sorority sisters are helping to fuel her candidacy, including hosting fundraisers, attending events, and generally campaigning for her to become the Democratic nominee.
Former Louisiana State University (LSU) student and ex-Phi Delta Theta member Matthew Naquin was convicted of negligent homicide Wednesday, July 17, in the 2017 alcohol-related hazing death of Max Gruver. According to The Advocate, Naquin’s lead attorney is going to appeal the decision. The judge said he will sentence Naquin on October 16. He faces anywhere from probation to up to five years in prison. This story was covered widely, including by The New York Times, The Atlanta Journal Constitution, newspressnow.com, and CNN. Naquin has also been charged with obstruction of justice for allegedly deleting hundreds of files from his phone during the criminal investigation and after a search warrant had been issued for the phone, but he was not standing trial on that charge this month.

The Fraternity’s 2018-2019 fiscal year ended June 30. Expense reports for 2018-2019 expenses will be accepted until, but no later than, July 31. The Fraternity’s audit begins on Aug. 21. Also remember that, in accordance with the Fraternity’s travel policy, only expenses submitted within 90 days of expenditure will be reimbursed. If you have any questions, contact your staff partner.
