As reported in outlets like Inside Higher Ed and USA TODAY, a court ruling (if successful) in a civil lawsuit against Louisiana State University (LSU) could lead to significant changes in college disciplinary systems. Offering a new interpretation of Title IX, the Gruver family’s attorneys contend the university has failed to protect male students from fraternity hazing in the same way it has with women in sororities. Max Gruver was 18 years old when he died from an alcohol-related hazing ritual in 2017 as part of his pledging Phi Delta Theta at LSU.
Three male students from The University of Mississippi have been suspended from their fraternity after a photo showing them posing with guns in front of Emmett Till’s memorial surfaced, according to CNN. Taylor Anderson, president of the school’s Kappa Alpha Order, denounced the photo in a statement to the outlet. “The photo is inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable. It does not represent our chapter,” Anderson said. “We have and will continue to be in communication with our national organization and the University."
