The Harvard Crimson and The Boston Globe report Harvard University will drop its set of sanctions against students who join single-gender organizations. The policy has been challenged in state and federal courts by a set of sororities, fraternities, and students. In an email cited by the Crimson, Harvard University President Lawrence S. Bacow said the decision was based on the recent Supreme Court decision in Bostock v. Clayton County regarding sex discrimination. From The Crimson: "While the Bostock decision primarily concerned sexual orientation and transgender identity, Bacow wrote that university administrators concluded the Court’s decision in the case made it clear Harvard would lose the lawsuit and 'be legally barred from further enforcing the policy.'"
AP News and The Columbus Dispatch report the former president of the now-defunct Sigma Pi Fraternity at Ohio University pleaded guilty Tuesday morning to drug and hazing charges in connection with the death of Collin Wiant. Prosecutors said that as fraternity president, Elijah Wahib allowed members to haze pledges, including forcing them to consume hot sauce and exercise excessively. Wahib was sentenced by Athens County Common Pleas Judge Patrick Lang to 31 days in jail for the misdemeanors, with one day of credit, and to participation in a drug and alcohol diversion program for the felonies.
The Chronicle of Higher Education published findings from a national survey conducted by the Art & Science Group, reporting that COVID-19 hasn’t dashed college plans. Most students (81 percent) were at least somewhat confident that colleges would be able to hold in-person classes in fall 2021. But confidence in that outcome varied by subgroup. Doubts were more prevalent among low-income students, those planning to apply for financial aid, those attending public schools, and those who had not taken Advanced Placement exams.
