At its meeting Friday, June 12, Grand Council received reports on housing, Theta Foundation, strategic planning, COVID-19, and racial justice; considered an officer appointment and a membership termination appeal; and made the following vice president appointments effective July 1.
Theta’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) workgroup met on Wednesday, June 10. The workgroup is made up of educators and researchers whose work centers on diversity and inclusion. Over the past year, the group has been engaging in the first phase of an organization-wide audit to fully evaluate Kappa Alpha Theta’s structure, policies, practices, and programs. The feedback collected in this first phase will include additional opportunities this month for all members. While the group is interested in feedback from all members, it will be centering on the stories, experiences, and change recommendations from Black members and members with marginalized identities. The second phase of this audit will include external reviewers who specialize in conducting DEI audits; the DEI workgroup is working to identify this team. Findings will be made available to the greater Kappa Alpha Theta community.
A follow-up statement was presented on Theta’s social media channels last week that included actions being taken to denounce racism and to create a more inclusive membership. This statement also included that at the July Grand Council meeting, the creation of a diversity, equity and inclusion executive-level chapter office will be discussed. Stories from members have also been collected and shared on the Theta website and Theta’s social media channels.
