The Associated Press reports that police have issued arrest warrants charging 46 Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity members at the University of New Hampshire with student hazing, which is classified as a misdemeanor. Police said they investigated the hazing allegations involving new members of the SAE chapter house on April 13, and the warrants were issued June 7. The school was made aware of the incident by the fraternity national headquarters, and immediately notified the local police. The national fraternity said it paused its investigation after the police started their own, and that it’s cooperating with local authorities. The police aren't currently disclosing the details of the hazing incident to the public.
According to Texas Christian University (TCU)’s student newspaper TCU360, TCU Chancellor Victor Boschini is committed to keeping fraternity and sorority life on campus in the midst of the Abolish Greek Life (AGL) movement. AGL supports the notion of the complete dismantlement of sororities and fraternities due to their history of violence and elitism. National Panhellenic Conference CEO Dani Weatherford said the purpose of sororities is to empower women and not marginalize them, and has enacted diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) training and created DEI-focused leadership positions. The author points out that although these are positive DEI efforts, AGL supporters still view fraternity and sorority life as classist and elitist due to high membership fees and dangerous due to consistent hazing incidents that occur around the country.
