March 7, 2022, marked a year since Stone Foltz, a sophomore at Bowling Green State University, passed away due to fraternity-related hazing, reports the Associated Press. Foltz’s death influenced a new law in Ohio that created tougher criminal penalties for hazing. Bowling Green has hired a hazing prevention coordinator and made it easier for students to report hazing. The university’s anti-hazing policy calls for zero tolerance and expulsion when there is death, serious physical harm, or substantial risk of serious physical harm.
The Seattle Times reports anti-hazing legislation in the Washington statehouse received overwhelming bipartisan support in the State Senate and appears on a path to full passage. The bill updates the state’s 30-year-old definition of hazing and requires higher education institutions to make all reports of hazing public. The bill is being amended to be formally known as “Sam’s Law” in honor of Washington State University student Sam Martinez, who passed away in 2019 due to a fraternity-related hazing incident. According to Sam’s mother Jolayne Houtz, the prime sponsor of both bills, Rep. Mari Leavitt, D-Tacoma, has pledged to bring back a second bill during the next session that would change the penalty for hazing from a misdemeanor to a felony.
The recruitment committee has an available recruitment and Panhellenic district director (RPDD) position. If you are interested in the RPDD role or know of someone who would be a good fit, please submit/encourage them to submit the Workforce Volunteer Interest Indicator in Theta Portal under Forms by April 1, 2022.
The recruitment committee also has opportunities for those who may be interested in serving on the committee in other capacities. We have two roles, the first being working specifically within the Panhellenic space with chapters and volunteers, and the second is working specifically on recruitment related-marketing efforts. If you are interested in either role or learning more, please contact Brittany Booth, associate director of collegiate services.
Please join Mandy Womack, college committee chairman, in welcoming Brittany Scancarella Ela, Lambda/Vermont, to the college committee. Brittany is now college district director (CDD) in College District IV. She will work with Christine McDonald, recruitment committee chairman, on a transition plan for her RPDD role.
