According to The Hill, CBS News, WPTV, and MSNBC, the Florida House of Representatives advanced House Bill 999, a bill that would ban Florida’s public colleges from paying for programs that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. The bill would also prohibit majors and minors with coursework touching on race theory, gender studies, and intersectionality. As a result, it could eradicate entire majors such as African American studies, gender studies, and women’s studies. Florida representatives championing the bill say that it won’t impact Black and Latino student organizations, but the language of the bill has led to concerns that Black fraternities and sororities will be barred from Florida campuses under the proposed legislation. The bill has yet to pass either house of the state legislature.
(NOTE: National Panhellenic Conference [NPC] CEO Dani Weatherford will continue to communicate with member organization delegates, executives, and presidents about this rapidly changing situation in Florida.)
