According to The Associated Press, former fraternity president Daylen Dunson has pled guilty in the hazing death of Bowling Green State University student Stone Foltz. Dunson pled guilty last Thursday to several charges, including reckless homicide, tampering with evidence, obstruction, and eight counts of misdemeanor hazing. The charges stem from the March 2021 death of Foltz, a sophomore from Delaware, Ohio. Dunson became the sixth person to plead guilty in the case, and each defendant could receive a jail term, although prosecutors say that probation is more likely.
The Daily Orange reports that Syracuse University’s Gamma Phi Beta sorority has been placed on disciplinary and social probation until May 2023 and December 2022, respectively. University communication staff have confirmed the sorority was found responsible for violations of the Code of Student Conduct following conduct proceedings. The chapter was sanctioned as a result. The sorority is not permitted to host or participate in social activities while probation is in place.
Inside Higher Ed reports that Baylor University announced sanctions against Pi Kappa Phi last week after an investigation found the fraternity guilty of hazing pledges via sleep deprivation. The student who reported the incident said it was more than sleep deprivation. The student, through his father, told Inside Higher Ed that he was forced to delete all social media from his phone and share his cellular location with other fraternity members. He was also asked to use his parents’ credit card to purchase items that would become the pledge’s “hazing bag,” including sardines, a brick, a blindfold, matches, five packets of Emergen-C and a water bottle. During the hazing initiation process, the student said he was confined to a cramped room and denied sleep for 48 hours. He was required to eat multiple cans of sardines as quickly as possible and then do calisthenics. Pledges who vomited were forced to eat their own vomit, the student’s father said. Although Baylor placed Pi Kappa Phi on disciplinary probation and social suspension, the university is still allowing the fraternity to participate in next fall’s homecoming float parade, intramural sports and “other activities that benefit the Baylor community or promote positive, internal chapter development.” Although the university is confident in its decision, the student who made the hazing reports and his family are now calling on Baylor to re-examine the incident, urging the university to expel and hold individual fraternity members accountable under Texas’s anti-hazing law, which classifies hazing that causes serious bodily injury to another as a Class A misdemeanor.
According to The Associated Press, two former members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at Bowling Green State University charged in the death of Stone Foltz pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in Foltz's death after taking a plea deal, the Wood County prosecutor said. Foltz, 20, died last year from alcohol poisoning after a fraternity initiation event. The two other defendants also agreed to plead guilty to felony tampering with evidence, although their charges weren’t directly connected to the involvement in Foltz’s death. The prosecutor, Paul Dobson, said he wouldn’t speculate on whether the remaining four defendants would reach plea agreements. Their trial is scheduled for May 16.
