The Chronicle of Higher Educationpublished a lengthy story titled ‘Someone is Going to End up Dead’ (available only to subscribers) on Phi Sigma Phi at Central Michigan University, a fraternity that repeatedly violated both school rules and the law but was only recently punished. The story highlights Phi Sigma Phi as indicative of the flaws of university bureaucracy in addressing threats to student safety.
Many of the problems the public traditionally associates with fraternities—hazing, excessive drinking, sexual assault—can be explained by the pervasiveness of toxic masculinity within chapters, according to a story published in Quartz. The article looks at this issue as well as many efforts to change behavior.
The Washington Post reported on a video showing students at Hofstra University who are members of Alpha Epsilon Pi forcing a dog to drink beer. The Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Hofstra University have both launched investigations into this behavior, and the fraternity has been suspended until the investigations are concluded. They will also attend breakout sessions on child welfare-related topics and present the 2019 Kappa Alpha Theta CASA/GAL Program Director of the Year Award.
