WAFB reported on the suspension of Pi Beta Phi at Louisiana State University (LSU) based on hazing allegations. The university has begun a formal investigation of possible hazing by the chapter, and it will remain suspended until the investigation ends.
Los Angeles Patch reported on the decision of a Los Angeles judge in a lawsuit filed by five University of Southern California (USC) fraternal organizations. Kappa Alpha Theta and four men’s fraternities filed a lawsuit alleging the University’s policies on recruitment infringed upon their First Amendment rights. The judge dismissed the lawsuit, claiming the University’s policies were legitimate and intended to allow freshmen to acclimate before becoming affiliated with a fraternity or sorority.
The New York Times reported on a proposal by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to overhaul the procedures for addressing sexual misconduct at colleges and universities. The plan narrows the type of complaints that schools will be required to investigate, and further protects accused students. Students accused of sexual misconduct would be presumed innocent throughout investigations, their attorneys would be able to cross-examine their accusers. Additionally, the definition of sexual harassment will be further refined, severely limiting what types of offenses can be investigated. The Post Athens reported on the suspension of Sigma Pi Fraternity at Ohio University following the death of new member Collin Wiant, 18. A full investigation has been launched by the university to investigate Sigma Pi and the events that lead to the student’s death. KBTX reported on the results of an investigation conducted by Texas A&M University following the death of Phi Gamma Delta pledge Joseph Little, 18. The university found the fraternity in violation of school hazing and alcohol policies and suspended the fraternity from campus. Police are currently investigating the exact circumstances of Little’s death.
The Fraternity, Theta Foundation, and Fraternity Housing Corporation (FHC) offices will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 21 through Friday, Nov. 23 in recognition of the (U.S.) Thanksgiving Day holiday.
