USA Today reported on the wave of fraternity and sexual violence protests that occurred on college campuses across the country this semester. The reporter noted social media helps drive protests as students can easily communicate and quickly organize. The reporter also detailed the conflicting research on fraternity men and sexual assault. Jud Horras of the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) is featured in the article and calls on students to hold fraternities accountable publicly—rather than anonymously on social media—and to understand there is no need to demonstrate against fraternities that report sexual assault and take action.
In an opinion piece in The Los Angeles Times, columnist Jean Guerrero details negative experiences she had at fraternities as a student at the University of Southern California (USC). Guerrero goes on to criticize USC’s response to sexual assaults in September and argues that fraternity culture promotes the mass mistreatment of young women. In a Letter to the Editor in The Los Angeles Times, the NIC argues that with the decline of males enrolling in universities, fraternities often have near-record enrollments and are beneficial to students and campus communities.
