The Washington Post reports on the work of grieving parents (including the Piazza family) who have partnered with national fraternities and sororities in an aggressive, multipronged effort to end hazing—a campaign that has taken them to Congress. The piece includes references to the work of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC)and the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) to advocate for the Educational Notification and Disclosure of Actions risking Loss of Life by Hazing Act or END ALL Hazing Act. This legislative advocacy is part of an accelerating campaign led by parents and fraternity and sorority leaders to pursue greater transparency and stronger consequences for those who commit hazing.
The Columbus Dispatch released an article and six-part podcast series chronicling the death of Collin Wiant, an 18-year-old freshman in 2018 while a new member of Sigma Pi at Ohio University.
A 20-year-old member of Theta Chi at UC Santa Cruz, Alex Beletsis, died after falling out of a window at an off-campus fraternity gathering in 2018. According to USA Today, his parents have filed suit against Theta Chi, individual members of the fraternity, and the owner of the property where the accident occurred. Theta Chi is no longer at UC Santa Cruz.
Five men – all members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at UC Irvine – have been charged in connection with the death of their fraternity brother, who succumbed to alcohol poisoning after a party earlier this year, according to ABC News. Sigma Alpha Epsilon is no longer a registered fraternity at UC Irvine.
