According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, then Assistant Professor of English Jana Matthews joined a sorority at Rollins College to connect with her students and found that she sincerely valued and enjoyed her experience in Greek life. In fact, her time as a faculty adviser for two sororities and a fraternity influenced her to write a book: The Benefits of Friends: Inside the Complicated World of Today’s Sororities and Fraternities. It studies the close same-sex friendships that are a central part of sorority and fraternity membership and how fraternity and sorority relationships can uplift students while also perpetuating harm—with the goal of prompting a more informed conversation about the future of the groups. National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) CEO Dani Weatherford was interviewed by the author and is quoted in the book.
WCMH reports that three fraternities and one sorority at Ohio State University have been sanctioned or suspended for conduct violations since August. FarmHouse and Delta Tau Delta fraternities face punishments including probation and operational suspension for multiple conduct violations. Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and Kappa Alpha Theta sorority remain under investigation, according to Ohio State’s Sorority and Fraternity Life disciplinary records. Some of the violations include hazing, alcohol code violations, destruction of property, falsifying information, endangering behavior and more.
Note: Since this article came out, the allegations against the Kappa Alpha Theta chapter have been dismissed.
