The Detroit News offers coverage of the University of Michigan’s decision to mandate deferred recruitment on the Panhellenic and Interfraternity Council (IFC) communities. The piece includes comment from NPC’s Dani Weatherford, who pushes back strongly regarding the unilateral approach the university has taken while enacting this policy shift.
Florida’s new anti-hazing law—enacted following the death of a Florida State fraternity member in 2017—takes effect this week, according to CBS 12 News. The new measure gives prosecutors the ability to charge fraternity and sorority members who may not have been present for hazing but planned it. Another unique feature of the new law: the first person to see a hazing victim in medical need, call 911, and remain until help arrives can avoid criminal charges. The same protection applies for anyone who administers medical aid.
The Wall Street Journal offers coverage of a group of sorority sisters who pledged friendship and support to one another more than 60 years ago, recounting how they’ve lived up to their pledge in the decades since.
Ohio University suspended all 15 IFC organizations amid hazing concerns, according to several outlets including CBS News. Additional groups, including three sororities, the marching band, and a professional fraternity, are also under suspension according to several outlets including ABC News.
