On Sept. 19, the U.S. House of Representatives passed Freedom of Association legislation and marked a critical step toward ensuring students' right are protected on college campuses.
For years, universities have increasingly restricted students’ ability to freely join organizations, particularly single-sex groups like fraternities and sororities. This move by the House aims to safeguard students’ constitutional rights, ensuring they can associate with the organizations that align with their personal beliefs and needs.

The Fraternity and Sorority Action Fund's third annual First Amendment Institute is taking place Feb. 21-23, 2025, in Chicago. Students will hear from distinguished speakers from the legal, higher education, public relations, and faith communities, and will learn how to protect their organizations from external challenges to their collective freedom of association and freedom of speech rights. This program is geared towards emerging student leaders. Additional information is included in the application link, including a recap of their experience last year by former participants Meghan Quinn, Beta Phi/Penn State, and Katie Kirk, Zeta Eta/Wofford. The application deadline is Friday, Oct. 25.
If you know of emerging student leaders for the fraternity and sorority experience, please encourage them to apply for this experience. Preference will be given to sophomores and juniors. You can also pass along their email address to Alicia Lee, director of government relations, and she will reach out to them directly. If you have any questions about these two programs, please contact Alicia.
