U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is preparing new policies on campus sexual misconduct that would bolster the rights of students accused of assault, harassment or rape, reduce liability for institutions of higher education, and encourage schools to provide more support for victims. The New York Times reported that the proposed rules narrow the definition of sexual harassment, holding schools accountable only for formal complaints filed through proper authorities and for conduct said to have occurred on their campuses.
National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) was mentioned in Florida Southern College’s school newspaper, The Southern, in an article about Blast Off, an event for new students. This is the first year that NPC and Interfraternity Council affiliates were not invited to table at Blast Off; they were granted their own event on Aug. 24. NPC was also mentioned in The News Record, the University of Cincinnati’s student-run paper, about the extension process that led to Zeta Tau Alpha joining the campus Greek community this fall.
Penn State News reported that Jim and Evelyn Piazza, parents of Timothy Piazza, addressed student leaders in Penn State’s Greek-life community on Wednesday, Aug. 29, on a program designed to help chapter officers emphasize promotion of health, safety, and civic engagement during Greek organization recruitment and new member education initiatives.
Chapter Compliance Committee Chairman April Brown is happy to welcome Daria Bisharah, Zeta Nu/UC Davis; Whitney Edwards, Epsilon Omicron/Randolph-Macon; and Kelsey Mills, Theta Theta/NC State, to the chapter compliance committee. They join Courtney Knittle, Zeta Eta/Wofford, who has been on the committee since 2012.
