Committee Chairman Vacancies

As we reach the six-year mark of the workforce reorganization, four standing committee chairmen (College Chapter Budget Committee Chairman Nicole Frank, Recruitment Committee Chairman Cate Bibb, Risk Prevention Committee Chairman Cynthea Yestal, and Scholarship Committee Chairman Christa Sobon) must leave their positions after completing two three-year terms in a single office.

If you are interested in any of these positions, please submit the online volunteer interest indicator form no later than October 15. Job descriptions for each of these positions can be found in Igloo under Files > Resources > Volunteer Resources > Chairman and District Director Job Descriptions.

Phishing Prevention Tips

Phishing is the attempt to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and sometimes, indirectly, money), often for malicious reasons, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. There has been a recent increase in phishing attempts both at Theta headquarters and among our chapters and volunteers. Below are some handy rules of thumb to prevent becoming a phishing victim.

• Be skeptical of any invoice, request for payment, or transfer of money that you receive.
• Check the “from” address.
  • Do you know this person? Are you expecting this email?
  • Scammers often claim to be someone that they are not and the email address will not match the name of the person you know.
  • They may try to copy our domain or another real domain so look closely. For example, someone has used kappalphatheta.org (missing ‘a’) or kappaallphatheta.org (double ‘l’).
  • If it looks like it came from headquarters or another volunteer but you are suspicious, pick up the phone and call them to double-check. Don’t reply to the email.

• Don’t click the link to see what it is! If you aren’t expecting it and don’t know what it is, don’t click on the link. Think curiosity and cats.
• Never give your username, password, or banking information in response to an email request.
• Bonus Tip 1: If you ever have a pop-up on your computer telling you to call Microsoft, do not call the number. Run your antivirus program instead.
• Bonus Tip 2: If you ever get a call claiming to be Microsoft and wanting to help you with your computer, hang up. It’s not Microsoft.

Upcoming Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee (FSPAC) Receptions

These receptions are great opportunities to learn more about the efforts of the FSPAC, a bipartisan group that supports a slate of lawmakers that champion policy issues to defend the rights of our student members and alumni volunteers.
