The only two fraternities at Swarthmore College have opted to disband amid outrage over years-old documents containing derogatory comments about women, the LGBTQ community, and jokes about sexual assault. Delta Upsilon and Phi Psi (which is not affiliated with a national organization), announced their decisions in separate Facebook posts Tuesday, April 30. “We cannot in good conscience be members of an organization with such a painful history,” Phi Psi said in its statement. Dozens of student protesters at Swarthmore, a highly selective, private liberal arts college in suburban Philadelphia, had occupied the on-campus Phi Psi house during a four-day sit-in, calling for both fraternities to be shut down and the buildings put to other uses. Swarthmore had suspended fraternity activity while it investigated. Its lone sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta’s Alpha Beta Chapter, was not affected. Many outlets, including a variety of national outlets such as ABC News, Rolling Stone, CBS This Morning, FOX News, Associated Press, New York Post, The New York Times, and CNN, covered this news.
The Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Pi Fraternity at Ohio University has been expelled from campus following the death of pledge Collin Wiant last November. A toxicology report found Wiant died of asphyxiation due to nitrous oxide ingestion. The fraternity was charged with 10 violations of the student code of conduct, mostly concerning acts of hazing as well as alcohol and drug violations. Wiant’s family is moving forward with a lawsuit against the fraternity. Several outlets reported on this developing story, including Cleveland.com and Associated Press.
