You may have already seen this opinion piece in the Yale Daily News by Nat Wyatt, Epsilon Tau/Yale. Although it addresses gender-nonconformity, the editorial mainly focuses on personal experiences of male/female relationships and behavior at the university. Our decision to not respond publicly to this editorial reflects our desire to respect the rights of our partner institutions to shape their campus cultures.
Our decision to not respond publicly is not a contradiction of our desire to create a welcoming, receptive, supportive community, as expressed in our statement of membership eligibility: Kappa Alpha Theta welcomes as members, in accordance with the laws of the Fraternity, college women, without regard to race, religion, national origin, age, disability, or other characteristics protected by applicable law. As some of the earliest women to attend college, Kappa Alpha Theta’s founders fought for inclusion in a frequently hostile educational and social environment. Our mission is to offer women lifelong opportunities for social, intellectual, and moral growth. Those who identify as women are eligible for membership in Kappa Alpha Theta.
